Depending on what type of lock you have this can often become quite expensive becuase of labor costs and purchasing a brand new lock.

On the other hand rekey involves taking apart your lock cylinder without having to remove it from its place on the door, then replaces only the key pins inside which are the tiny parts inside of each lock that align with grooves in each key in order for it to unlock the door.

After replacing these pins any old key won’t work anymore and you will be provided with a new key.
